Dean Smith rules out quick Walsall FC move for Jem Gordon

The 19-year-old, who currently plies his trade for Phoenix 1976 in the Trinidad and Tobago Super League, was the standout of several local players handed trials by the Saddlers during their Caribbean tour.

Gordon scored three goals, including a brace which sparked the dramatic comeback in Sunday’s 3-2 win over a Pro League XI.

He also featured last night as Smith’s side completed their tour with a 1-1 draw against hosts Central FC at the Haseley Crawford Stadium.

But while the Saddlers boss has promised to keep tabs on his progress, he believes Gordon still has plenty of work to do before he is ready for League One football.

Smith also acknowledged getting a work permit for the forward, who is yet to feature for his national team, would be far from straightforward.

“Jem has done OK,” said Smith. “He still needs a lot of work, which he will get over in Trinidad. I don’t think he is ready for league football but he is one we will certainly keep an eye on.

“When you look to bring players over there are many things you have to consider including work permits.

“But he is definitely someone we will monitor.”

Danny Griffiths scored an equaliser early in the second period against Central FC to ensure the Saddlers completed the tour with an unbeaten record, following previous wins over the Pro League XI and Tobagan club side Stokeley Vale.

Before yesterday’s game the squad trained at the stadium and then met hundreds of local youngsters from the Terry Fenwick Football Factory. Former England international Fenwick is manager of Central FC’s soccer academy.

Defender Dean Holden believes Walsall will reap the benefits of the tour as the season progresses. “It’s been a good trip. Hard but good,” said Holden.

“The days have been long and the sessions intense but we will reap the rewards.”
