10-man Barbados hold 'Warriors' in Digicel opener

Host nation Trinidad and Tobago only managed a disappointing 1-1 draw against Barbados in their opening match of the Digicel Caribbean Cup at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, P.O.S. A younger, new look version of the national team took the first half advantage as expected with a strike from TT Pro League’s B Mobile Joe Public striker Gary Glasgow just after the half hour mark, but Barbados found their way back with an equalizer in the 2nd half. The ‘Warriors’ had all the early possession with CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh playmaker Kerry Baptiste whipping in some neat crosses into the Barbados area. But it was the visitors who had the earliest chance overall when in the 10th minute striker Ryan Lucas had a 19 yard low effort pushed wide by goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams for a corner. Trinidad and Tobago strikers Gary Glasgow and Scott Sealy were feeding well off the plays of midfielders Kerwin Jemmott and newly appointed captain Densill Theobald to cause havoc in the Barbados defence but was unable to score. In the 29th minute US based player Leslie Fitzpatrick opened up and had a decent try at goal from 19yards out to force a save and also win a corner for the ‘Warriors’. It was from that very same corner in the 32nd minute Gary Glasgow put the ‘Warriors’ ahead. The Joe Public striker easily slotted the ball just inside the upright at far post from inside the penalty area beating goalkeeper Morrison Taylor to send the Trinidad and Tobago fans wild the home team taking the 1-0 lead. However, Barbados didn’t roll over. In the 34th minute John Hawkesworth had a promising counter attack but his 22yard effort flew high over the goal keeper Williams’ bar. Three minutes later Ryan Lucas breached the Trinidad and Tobago area on the right side to meet a pass from his captain Norman Forde and had a shot on goal, which was low and wide. Shortly before the interval Trinidad and Tobago had the last real attempt of the half when Fitzpatrick raced down the left side and sent in a fierce cross that goal scorer Glasgow failed to capitalize on in front of goal and kept the score at 1-0 in favor of the home team. Straight into the second period Gary Glasgow created a chance for his double but unselfishly he tried play his strike partner Scott Sealy on goal which proved to be a less than favorable choice. In the 55th minute the ‘Warriors’ had one of their great buildups starting with Superstar Rangers’ Kerwin Jemmott in middle to Joe Public’s Seon Power and then to Kerry Baptiste who created room for himself to chip in a threatening cross, unfortunately it wasn’t met by one of Barbados defenders. But the Trinbagonians seemed to lose their rhythm as Barbados began controlling possession. In the 58th minute the ‘Bajan’ captain Norman Forde came close, but not close enough when he shot wide off Neil Harvey’s corner. Midfielder Jemmott who featured less in the second period had a 24 yard shot over bar, after getting the better of defender Gregory Goodridge with a short corner from Kerry Baptiste in the 63rd minute. Shortly afterwards Barbados were a breath away from equalizing when Neil Harvey flicked the ball across the face of Williams’ goal winning a corner. From the exact corner in the 67th minute Barbados got the equalizer and it was from the same player. Harvey tapped in Dyson James corner past goalkeeper Williams who had a heap of players in his way as the ‘Bajans’ celebrated leveling the score at 1-1. The Trinidad and Tobago coach, Wim Rijsbergen then introduced Darryl Roberts as an option in front for MLS player Scott Sealy as he tried to get his team back on top. Only one minute on the pitch and Roberts squandered the simplest of chances when he tapped wide from in front of an open goal a low cross from goal scorer Gary Glasgow in the 70th minute. Surely, a win now was starting to fade away from the Trinbagonians, missing crucial chances and under pressure from a stubborn Barbados outfit. Kerry Baptiste who was more or less the best player for the ‘Warriors’ on the night sent a sneaky cross into the Barbados area as both Glasgow and Roberts threw their entire bodies at the ball only to see it go wide. Barbados then went down a man as John Hawkesworth received his second yellow card from referee Roberto Moreno in the 80th minute after having a decent performance. Trinidad and Tobago then tried to take advantage of the situation, but Barbados seemed more desperate for the draw. The ‘Soca Warriors’ captain and only World Cup player in the squad Densill Theobald who was less than himself in the match created an opening for Glasgow in the 86th minute. Densill sent a long through ball from the middle of the field to Glasgow as the striker had one man to beat but to the disappointment of the home supporters, his shot went wide. The last effort of the match came from ‘Warriors’ substitute Darryl Roberts whose fresh legs were felt by the ‘Bajans’. Roberts took in stride a Baptiste pass, turned and shot at goal from 26 yards but his effort flew just a whisker over the crossbar in the 90th minute. The ‘Bajans’ however, held on to referee Moreno’s final whistle as they looked pleased with the 1-1 score against Trinidad and Tobago and both teams leaving with just one point each.
