Trinidad swamp Barbados in CFU tourney

TRINIDAD and Tobago maintained their supremacy over Barbados with a convincing 4-0 victory in the first leg of a first round Caribbean Football Union (CFU) tournament qualifying game on Sunday.

A crowd of 5,000 at Kensington Oval saw the visitors dominate from the first whistle as Barbados found little inspiration on the eve of their 21st anniversary of independence.

Trinidad went ahead after only eight minutes when Hutson Charles converted a free kick taken by Brian Williams from the right flank.

Charles found himself unmarked, squeezed the ball on to the left upright before it tricked over the line.

Charles and midfielder Russel Latapy, who had an outstanding game, almost put the visitors further ahead in the 16th minute but a magnificent save from Eyre Sealy denied a powerful shot by Charles who was put through by Latapy.

Barbados missed a chance to equalise in the 27th minute but Jules Ellis headed over the goal bar from close range with the goalkeeper beaten.

Trinidad scored their second goal in the 28th minute after opening up the Barbados defence from the left side, a ploy used throughout the game.

Philbert Jones crossed and found Leonson Lewis who lashed the ball past the helpless Sealy.

In the second half, Barbados had their best opportunity, when captain Anthony Clarke was sent clear by Colin Forde. The shot went wide from about 10 metres.

Trinidad too missed simple opportunities in the 48th, 50th and 52nd minutes.

Barbados enjoyed the most possession midway through the second half forcing saves from Michael Maurice and it was against the run of play that the alert visitors scored again.

The Barbadians lost possession in the centre of the field and, on a counter attack, the hardworking Philbert Jones scored in the 68th minute.

In the 75th, it was Jones again who scored from six metres out.

Trinidad and Tobago defend their 4-0 margin of victory at home next Sunday in the return leg and seem certain to go through to the second round.

Barbados have not beaten Trinidad since 1976.
