T&T beaten 2-0 by Colombia

Trinidad and Tobago's Warriors return home tomorrow after crashing out of the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup yesterday with a defeat against Colombia.

The national footballers were just 14 minutes away from a quarter-final place against either the United States or Costa Rica in Boston, when they conceded two late goals to go down 2-0 to the Colombians, who were beaten in their earlier matches at the tournament.

After holding Panama (2-2) and Honduras (1-1) to draws, the Warriors finished last in Group A with two points.

Needing just a point to advance, Trinidad and Tobago survived the first half with a 0-0 stalemate...but only just. The Colombians carved out a few chances to go ahead, but were foiled either by the brilliance of T&T goalkeeper Kelvin Jack or their own inefficiency in front of goal.

Jack was called into action as early as the 14th minute, when Jario Patino's curling free-kick flew dangerously at his far post. Luckily, the ball skimmed wide off the head of Colombian striker Jaime Castrillon, with Jack hopelessly out of position.

Later, Jack twice came to the rescue of his team, first placing his body in the way of Aldo Ramirez's shot and later palming away another effort from the Colombian forward near the halfway stage.

Colombia turned up the heat in the second half and looked to have taken the lead when midfielder Patino's driving run through the T&T right flank opened up a clear chance for Martin Arzuaga in the centre of the Warriors goal. But Jack was brilliant, getting his body in the way of the shot to deflect the ball out for a corner.

Minutes later, the keeper was again vigilant when substitute Wason Ramirez breached the T&T defence down the middle, Jack running out to clear the danger.

Trinidad and Tobago were then starting to get into the game following the introduction of Brent Rahim and Angus Eve at the half. It was Rahim who created T&T's first notable chance in the 62nd minute when finding captain Stern John with a curling cross into the Colombian penalty area.

John eluded his marker, but as he was about to shoot, the ball was played out for a corner.

Keeper Jack continued to keep the Colombians at bay, until the 76th minute when Rahim turned in Abel Aguilar's low shot at the far post.

The own goal seemed to break the Warriors' spirits, resulting in a second goal for Colombia when substitute Hector Hurtado was allowed too much space in the dying minutes and hit a low shot across Jack and into the T&T far post.

That ended T&T's participation at this year's Gold Cup.
