DEFENDING champions Carenage Boys’ Government Primary School booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2008 Atlantic LNG National Primary Schools Football League competition with a convincing 3-0 victory over New Grant Government at the Larry Gomes Stadium on Monday.

Anthony Penn scored for the champions in the first half, while Kathon St. Hillaire and Kadeem Hutchinson put the issue beyond doubt on the resumption as Carenage dominated play, intent on retaining their title.

Coach Harold Telesford was pleased with the outcome of the match but felt his players could have scored more goals. “The boys played well but threw away good chances to widen the scoreline,” he said.

Six matches were played off at the Larry Gomes Stadium on Monday. Also moving on to the quarter-finals, to be played at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva next Monday, are San Fernando Boys’ RC, La Horquetta North Government, Guayaguayare RC, Arima Boys’ RC and Egypt Government.

San Fernando dominated Cunapo (St Francis) RC, completing a 4-0 victory, with Quacy Cooper and Jerrard Dass scoring in the first half, and Matthew Joseph and Shemar Ravello contributing the other goals in the second half.

Paced by a double by Neveal Hackshaw and single strikes from Akeel Alfred and Taje Commissiong, La Horquetta overwhelmed Marabella Boys’ AC by 4-1. Kerron Mason scored the lone item for Marabella.

Guayaguayare also registered a comfortable 4-0 victory over Carapichaima RC with striker Darion Flemming completing the first hat- trick of the Round of 16. Kwesi Cooper added the other goal. Arima Boys won on sudden-death penalty kick after their match with Palo Seco Government ended in a pulsating 2-2 draw. Brandon Caldero and Renaldo Francois scored for Arima in regulation time with replies from Palo Seco’s Nicholson Gordon and Christopher Charles. Afton Molino scored in sudden death for Arima after the Palo Seco player sent his shot overbar.

In the final match played on Monday, Egypt scored a 2-0 victory over Chaguanas RC, with Direll McDonald and Kestwin Goolie netting the goals.

The final two quarter-final places will be up for grabs when Tobago schools Montgomery and Whim Anglican come up against Manzanilla Government and Mucurapo Boys’ RC, respectively, at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago.

Matches are played over 60 minutes (two halves of 30 minutes) with eight players a side with the field half the length and width of a normal sized football field. Vincent Graham, President of the National Primary schools Football League, said the smaller playing area would allow every player to get more involved in the game.

“With a normal field you would have some players only getting occasional touches on the ball. We are getting greater involvement from the players who have to be more creative and demonstrate their ability,” explained Graham.

Meanwhile the Girls Division played their Round of 16 matches at the Larry Gomes Stadium yesterday, with the quarter-finals scheduled for the Ato Boldon Stadium next Tuesday.
