Trinidad and Tobago won the first Shell Caribbean Cup football tournament with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Grenada at the National Stadium here on Sunday.
Midfielder Dwight Yorke, 18, with two goals, the decider in the dying moments of the match, handed the Trinidadians the Cup.
Trinidad and Tobago, smarting from a 2-0 drubbing by Guadeloupe on Friday, began aggressively from the start. They were rewarded with a superb volleyed goal by Yorke in the 24th minute.
The teams battled for the advantage and when it looked like Trinidad and Tobago would carry their 1-0 lead to the end, substitute Wayne Hood equalised for Grenada with a header six minutes from time.
But the Trinidadians, the short-priced favourites before the series began, were not to be denied and the gifted Yorke slammed home a free-kick in the 89t.
Yorke bagged the first of his pair, when, unmarked on the left side for a split second, scored with a powerful volley to the far post.
The Grenadian defender Steve Mark, who has impressed consistently in the series, had another fine match and carried off the player of the finals award.
Forward Chenny Joseph also had a superb match on the left side, and it was he who, after numerous attempts by the Grenadians, set up his team's goal.
Joseph, with a superb run down the left wing, crossed to Wayne Hood on the right who converted with a header over the advancing Trinidadian goalkeeper, Michael Maurice.
But Yorke quickly rose to the occasion and his free-kick from the left side mesmerised the Grenadian goalkeeper Godfrey Williams who watched helplessly and the ball curled into the net to set off celebrations among the Trinidadian players.
The victory earned Trinidad and Tobago US10,000 dollars.
