St Francois breezed past Maple Leaf 9-0 to sit comfortably atop of the BGTT First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Girls Championship North Zone, on Thursday afternoon.
Diamond Joseph netted four of her team’s goals, while Monique Gomez, Della Joseph, Chelsea-Marie Spence and Kelly Cooper each contributed to the scoreline.
Maple Leaf has not earned a point and has conceded a total of 25 goals in two matches. Providence earned their fourth win of the season with a 2-1 win over Malick, while the anticipated match-up between St Joseph Convent and Holy Name Convent did not kick off because of an issue of discipline in the Holy Name team in their last outing. St Joseph won 3-0 by default.
In another eagerly anticipated match-up in the South Zone, Debe and Vessigny were all geared up to kick off, with a sizable turn-out off support, media a well as a representative of the league sponsors—First Citizens.
The assigned referees, however, failed to show up to officiate for the match. The incident came as a “severe embarrassment” according to various stakeholders in the zone, as well as to the respective schools.
Such incidences has occurred on several occasions since the 2011 league season began, forcing several delays and postponements of matches. It will be determined next week if Debe and Vessigny’s match will be rescheduled. In the other South Zone match, Point Fortin East overcame Holy Faith 2-1.
Title deciders
The South Zone will see a double header at Techier Ground, beginning at 2 pm when Point Fortin East hosts Vessigny at 2 pm.
After the match, Point Fortin West and Debe will meet in a potential title decider at 4 pm. Debe, however, is expected to take three points as Point Fortin West is without a point for the season.
The top two teams in the East Zone, Arima North and St Augustine will battle for top spot when the two schools, separated by one point, challenge at the Arima North Ground at 3.45 pm.
There will be another potential zonal title decider when St Francois and St Joseph battle in the North Zone. St Francois thrashed St Joseph 5-0 in their first meeting this season, last month, and are fresh off a 9-0 whipping of Maple Leaf on Sunday.
