St Mary’s College saw themselves safely into the North Zone semi-finals of the Coca Cola InterCol competition yesterday with a 1-0 win over Trinity College at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo.

The “Saints” did not look like the same team that lost a tight Secondary Schools Football League “Big Five” final to Presentation College San Fernando last week in controversial circumstances, but did enough to ensure their spot in the final four. They will face Fatima College, who beat Diego Martin North 4-1 in the late match at the “Hasely Crawford”.

In the early match, the Saints always looked the stronger team, more organised and likely to score, but their lack of sharpness in front of goal was there biggest hindrance.

The Senior Division champs, Trinity, showed great fight, but not enough composure to make use of a few defensive errors by the North Zone winners. InterCol does not forgive an inability to score, so that’s where the season ended for the Moka Boys.

Rashad Hyacenth provided the only goal in the game, starting with a long throw by Aaron Noel close to the right corner flag. Poor Trinity defending gave St Mary’s the chance at a close range pass, and the play ended with a simple tap-in in the 20th minute.

But it was for sheer goal shyness that Hyacenth’s remained the only strike.
