JARRED DASS scored a pair as Naparima sealed the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Coca Cola National Intercol title yesterday.

In a game historically shown live on Sportsmax Channel, Naparima whipped St Anthony’s 2-0 to capture a record seventh Intercol crown.

St Anthony’s, after starting the game on the back foot, took control of proceedings and tested the Naparima goalie Levi Fernandez who came up trumps. The goal post was also relied upon to repel one of St Anthony’s strikes as Naparima’s defence came under tremendous pressure. St Anthony’s Kathon St Hillaire came close to breaking the deadlock before the half but he was again denied.

At the other end though, Dass scored from close range in the 45th minute with a right-footed shot, after being set up by captain Michael Basdeo. The St Anthony’s players, coached by Nigel Grovesnor, were a deflated bunch as their wastefulness in front goal came back to haunt them.

And the Angus Eve-coached Naparima widened the lead ten minutes into the second half.

Basdeo, in the penalty box, missed an aerial ball from the right flank but Dass, in the six-yard box, chested the ball before hitting a right-footer to the right of St Anthony’s goalkeeper Jabari Brice.

Later, St Hillaire created space on the right and forced an alert save from Naps goalie Levi Fernandez, in the 59th minute, while, on the opposite end, Naparima midfielder Isaiah Hudson made a surging diagonal run but shot his left-footer wide. St Anthony’s final chance to get on the scoresheet came in the 78th, as St Hillaire went at Naps defender Nicholas Thomas, but saw his right-footed effort blocked by an alert Fernandez.

This title was Naparima’s third for the season, having secured the SSFL Premiership and the South Zonal Intercol trophies.

Naparima College are now the most successful InterCol team ever.

A double from Jarred Dass elevated the forward to legendary status in Naparima folklore, as the southerners beat St Anthony's College 2-0 in yesterday's Coca-Cola National InterCol final at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium.

It was a record seventh win for "Naps," putting them above St Anthony's and Signal Hill Secondary. And the InterCol triumph also gave the Premier Division champions the second League/InterCol double in the school's history, following their clean sweep in 1999.

But in the end, the actual win was a bit of an anti-climax.
