'Warriors' bounce back big time...crushing Martinique

HASELY CRAWFORD STADIUM – Host nation Trinidad and Tobago whipped 10-man Martinique 5-1 in their Sedley Joseph Group match of the Digicel Caribbean Cup at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Monday night.

The new look ‘Soca Warriors’ bounced back well with a pair of goals each by Joe Public’s Gary Glasgow and San Juan Jabloteh’s Kerry Baptiste after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Barbados in their opening match of the tournament.

The Trinbagonians started off on a high with Darryl Roberts registering a goal in the third minute. Roberts who replaced Scott Sealy in coach Rijsbergen’s line-up headed in at far post a Densill Theobald 27 yard free kick giving goalkeeper Eddy Heurlie no chance as T&T took the early lead 1-0.

Martinique didn’t look worried as they continued at their high tempo. On a counter attack they forced a great one handed save by goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams in the 5th minute.

In the 13th minute goal scorer Roberts was close to a double when his 20-yard shot skidded off the crossbar to the relief of the Martinique bench.

At the other end with a determined attitude to get back on level terms Martinique equalized. Xavier Bullet lashed on to a Steve Gustan pass inside the area before slotting it past goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams to level the score at 1-1.

T&T then showed off some impressive passing with captain Densill Theobald leading well as he had a much better showing than his last performance against Barbados.

Striker Gary Glasgow was close to putting the home team ahead for the second time, but his flash of a shot passed inches from the upright.

It was then high drama in the Martinique penalty area defender Joan Deluge handled a Gary Glasgow shot off his goal line to receive an instant red card by referee Roberto Moreno.

Glasgow himself stepped to the spot, but to the disappointment of the T&T players and the 5000 plus supporters’ goalkeeper Heurlie saved his poor shot in the 33rd minute.

In the 36th minute Trinidad and Tobago regained the lead when Jabloteh playmaker Kerry Baptiste easily tapped the ball past two Martinique defenders after goalkeeper Heurlie had blocked initial shots by Darryl Roberts and Gary Glasgow—the ‘Warriors’ in front again 2-1.

Although Martinique players Patrick Percin, Eddy Beaufond and Steve Gustan performed well, it was just not working out for the visitors.

Late in the second half Martinique won a free kick just outside the area but Steve Gustan’s effort flashed over the crossbar to the dismay of his teammates.

Trinidad and Tobago took to the dressing rooms at the break with the 2-1 advantage to the satisfaction of both coach and supporters.

The scores changed by the second minute into the second period when Gary Glasgow headed in a left sided cross from Leslie Fitzpatrick to redeem himself for missing the first half penalty—T&T now leading 3-1.

In the 52nd minute Roberts who netted his first international goal in the first period, netted another but this time from an offside position and the goal was disallowed.

Martinique then tried to capitalize on a number of fouls by Trinidad and Tobago but failed. In the 55th minute Jose Goron had an in-swinging free kick easily collected by goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams. One minute later Xavier Bullet also had a shot that was easily blocked by Williams from inside the penalty area.

‘Warriors’ coach Wim Rijsbergen then fielded another young striker Joel Bailey replacing goal scorer Darryl Roberts in the 61st minute after the youngster had an impressive showing.

Five minutes after coming on Bailey had an attempt on goal, but his header from Baptiste’s cross was blocked midway by an on rushing goal keeper Heurlie.

While another substitute Hayden Tinto was making ‘mas’ with his powerful runs and dribbling skills against the Martinique players.

Bailey got in the mix of things again and this time he won a penalty. He was fouled on his way to goal by defender Audrick Linord in the 76th minute forcing referee Moreno to point to the spot for the second time in the game.

This time the penalty was left up to Kerry Baptiste who was already on a goal and he made no mistake blasting it to the right as Trinidad and Tobago went ahead 4-1 in the 77th minute.

The lights were surely out for Martinique when in the 83rd minute another Fitzpatrick and Glasgow combination resulted in a goal. Glasgow turned his marker both ways inside the penalty area before slamming it past goalkeeper Heurlie after receiving Fitzpatrick’s pass for the 5-1 score.

The match boiled down with the Martinique players showing frustration, as they were not able to get shots on goal. In the dying minutes of extra time Johan Clementia netted past goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams but from a clear offside position and referee Moreno disallowed before blowing the final whistle to end the match.

Losing their second match, Martinique are now unable to qualify for the semifinals of the Digicel Caribbean Cup while Trinidad and Tobago have a solid chance with their 5-1 win.

The ‘Soca Warriors’ next meet the Haitians on Wednesday to decide the winner of the group.
