Trincity Nationals advanced to the quarterfinal of the Women’s League Football (WoLF) FA Competition following a dramatic 3-2 win over Step by Step, in the second match of a doubleheader, at the Eddie Hart Savannah, on Thursday evening.

Trincity joins Arima Giants, Malabar Superstars, Defence Force, Real Dimension, Point Fortin Pioneers and Malick City into the quarter-finals.

The two First Division teams, Trincity Nationals and Step by Step, battled an intense match, with the former taking an early lead in the nineth minute through Shanelle Warrick from the penalty spot.

Step by Step responded almost immediately. Ahkeela Mollon and former national Tamar Watson connected with quick, one-touch passes, before Watson found a through pass for an onrushing Mollon, for the latter to finish. Trincity began the second half the stronger team, keeping defensive lines and possession.

It was Step by Step, nevertheless, which broke the deadlock, when Mollon converted a penalty in the 57th minute after she was taken down. Warrick (Shanelle) and Trincity, again responded immediately after the restart, when she lobbed a shot into the back of the net with Step by Step’s custodian misjudging the bounce of the ball, making it 2-2.

In the 65th minute, Warrick (Jonelle) sealed the quarterfinal berth with a goal, which resulted with a mix-up between the Step by Step defence and goalkeeper. She slotted home easily to give Trincity the win. Trincity opted to run down the clock in a defensive tactic, but Step by Step came close to the equaliser when Mollon sent a brilliant cross into the box, which her teammate shot into the side netting.

Tobago All Stars was scheduled to take on Tunapuna Titans in the last round-of-16 fixture at St George’s Ground last evening. Action will continue in the Premier Division and First Division, tomorrow and Sunday.
