Many thought that early Premier Division leaders Trincity would walk away with three points easily from last week’s match against promoted St Augustine in the Trinidad and Tobago Women’s Football League. But their opponents had other plans and upset the favourites by a 3-0 margin.
From the onset, St. Augustine looked hungry and determined to win.
They were rewarded in the 39th minute when Denisha O’Brien put the ball into an empty net following confusion between a defender and Linfah Jones, Trinidad and Tobago’s former FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup goalkeeper.
Trincity’s usually dominant Warrick sisters had some opportunities to score, but had marginal impact on the match. Meanwhile, national youth midfielder Patrice Campbell played a major role in St. Augustine’s success. Displaying confidence and skill, Campbell had a big hand in St. Augustine’s second item.
She drove the ball across the goal and had Jones stretching. The keeper only managed to deflect the ball into the path of O’Brien, who scored her second goal in the 54th minute, giving St Augustine a 2-0 advantage.
Jonelle Warrick almost pulled one back for Trincity in the 74th minute. Left one-on-one with the keeper, she placed a shot under the onrushing Nicole Mitchelle-Thomas, but the ball came off the post.
St Augustine’s third goal came in the 74th minute when Celeste Thomas beat goalkeeper Jones to a bouncing ball.
In other Premier Division matches last weekend, Real Dimension defeated Defence Force 2-0, while Step by Step and Rangers drew 1-1. The National U-17s travelled to Tobago and earned their first victory with a 2-1 victory over the Tobago women’s team.
