Former Trinidad and Tobago international Dexter Cyrus has been re-installed as Head Coach T&TEC FC at a much needed time.

Cyrus re-joined the club at a time of total dejection and had his first session last Thursday, following the departure of Coach Jefferson George.

It’s rumored that George’s decision to quit the post, came following his team’s 7-0 defeat against defending Digicel Pro League champions DIRECTV W Connection on Saturday 10 November.

T&TEC FC manager Peter Mohan told ttproleague.com, “Jefferson (goalkeeper coach with the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation) indicated that his duty with the national team is more.”

“George was in a tough situation,” said Cyrus who was relieved of the coaching position last March after the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC)’s decision to cut its sports club budget.

“I observed the guys are down, they aren’t motivated and they are unfit,” continued Cyrus who led the ‘Electric Boys’ to a more than respectable second position finish on debut last season in the Pro League Championship finishing one point behind winners W Connection (40 points).

Under Cyrus’ charge, T&TEC, which enjoyed success at the Super League level finishing second in 2009 and winning the Super League and knockout in 2010, made further headlines last season.

With a boosted squad and staff, T&TEC’s accomplishments included reaching the Finals of the First Citizens Cup and Toyota Classic—finishing second on both occasions.

But with the players’ roster and technical staff simmered to just employees of T&TEC and less than practical training time afforded this season, T&TEC sits at the bottom of the Championship with just one win and four defeats after five matches.

T&TEC also suffered a 2-0 defeat against eventual 2012 First Citizens Cup champions Caledonia AIA in the quarter-final round back in September.

“The situation now is that I’m back,” added Cyrus. “We didn’t get into the particulars yet. I just prefer to take the team than see the football end. And I just can’t think about my résumé in this situation.

“Mr. George stepped down and the players didn’t want the football to crash. The staff was in a difficult situation because we are not getting funding and the players aren’t getting time-off to train. There is nothing motivating the players other than they just want to play the football.

“The time off is really a hard factor. The guys aren’t getting to train. I don’t understand if we are representing T&TEC, then how come we’re not getting time off to train?”

Cyrus held the position of Technical Director/Head Coach at St. Benedicts College since April after he was relieved of the position as Head Coach. And it seems the 41 year old has brought some electricity since his return.

Last Friday, with assistant coach Desmond Bailey seated on the bench and Cyrus from the stands, T&TEC battled Super League club Joe Public to a 1-1 draw before winning 4-3 on penalties to advance into the quarter-final round of the Toyota Classic on Tuesday 27 November against North East Stars from 6pm at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium.

Friday’s win also included the return of striker Sylvester Teesdale.

“This is going to be a tough climb back to the top,” admitted Cyrus. “But one thing I’m sure, we have talent.”
