T&T’s senior women’s football team will take on Guatemala in a warm-up match tonight from 7 pm in Guatemala. The team left for a seven-day camp in Guatemala on Wednesday, where it will play two matches. The second is on Monday. The camp is being used as preparation for the Senior Women’s Gold Cup competition which will be held in Cancun, Mexico, from October 28 to November 9.Notably absent from the team, is Sweden-based professional, Ahkeela Mollon, who has been influential in many of T&T’s successes since her return to national duty this year. Jamaal Shabazz, coach of the team, simply explained that Mollon opted not to represent her country for the tournament. The team is also without any U-17 players, such as Kayla Taylor, due to the BGTT Girls Secondary School’s Football League currently taking place.

Shabazz said the players were invited and would have been solid additions to the squad, but he was forced to bow to the wishes of certain secondary school coaches who “contrived against the national effort.” He said, however, that despite a few knocks and bruises, his current team is fit and is looking forward to the next seven days together.“Guatemala is ready to play and we are happy to get two warm up matches,” said Shabazz. “We are also looking forward to the opportunity to integrate the foreign players with the locals. We hope to get the team to blend and to evaluate some of the things we want to replicate in the tournament and get the team spirit in a fighting mode.”

In other Gold Cup news, Group B of the tournament, will be moved from Playa del Carmen to Cancun, Mexico, allowing the entire eight-team event to be played in the Yucatan Peninsula resort. The United States, Costa Rica, Haiti and Guatemala will play their matches in Estadio Quintana Roo, while Group A will remain at Estadio Beto Avila. The previously announced schedule of dates remains unchanged except for the championship and third-place match, which will be played at Quinana Roo instead of Estadio Beto Avila.
