Three goals in the second half secured a 3-2 victory for the National Under-17 women's team in their first international match against hosts Panama on Saturday.

The team took on a mixed Panamanian team comprising members of both that country's under-17 and under-20 national teams.

Head coach Even Pellerud said despite some hiccups, he is very pleased with the team's performance

"This is the first international match the girls have played as a team. A victory is a great morale booster for them. They competed against a team with more experienced players and emerged victorious. A victory is always a positive way to begin any tour"

Jessica De Leon, Liana Hinds and Kayla Taylor got the goals for T&T, Taylor notching the winner in the 82nd minute with the scores tied at 2-2.

Commenting on the team's performance Pellerud was brutally honest.

"It would not be justified to state that we played an outstanding game against an age-mixed Panama team," he said. "The creation of good goal-scoring chances was (outstanding) though, but as we have seen a little too often in the WoLF games, our commitment in front of the goal is not as it should be. This might be an ongoing priority for us."

But despite that assessment, Pellerud is confident that his team will make progress.

"The girls were able to identify the vulnerable points in Panama's defence, they identified it and most importantly used it to their advantage. Sometimes we suffered from unclean finishing techniques, at other times the referee found a way to stop us from scoring in the middle of open breakaways. But I am proud of the team and its progress"

The under-17s will play two matches against El Salvador later this week.
