The upcoming Fifa U-17 Women’s World Cup (WWC) will have the full support of the sports ministry and the government by extension, according to Stacy Roopnarine, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs (MSYA).

“We are prepared to support in any way we can, especially for women in any sport,” said Roopnarine at the unveiling of the ticket for the WWC yesterday at MSYA Building, Abercromby Street in Port-of-Spain.

“The plan is to develop sport in T&T so that we can develop a viable sporting industry,” added Roopnarine, who was representing Anil Roberts, the newly appointed Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs.

Roberts, who took over as minister from Gary Hunt, was unavailable due to other commitments. The 16-team World Cup will take place from September 5-25 in T&T and tickets are currently available online at www.fifa.com or by calling 1-800-fans.

“Today is a great moment for T&T in sports, because not only does this signify the receipt of a ticket for the U-17 Women’s World Cup, but T&T has the pleasure of hosting this year and it also signifies what we as a government intend to focus on going forward,” said Roopnarine. “It signifies the marriage of sport and youth, especially for young women.”

Also at the launch was Minister of Works and Transport, Jack Warner, who was present in his capacity as Fifa vice-president, and T&T Football Federation president, Oliver Camps.

After purchase, tickets can be collected at the Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence, Macoya, on June 26, July 31 and August 28 with a venue in Tobago for distribution still to be decided.
