Goalkeeper Mark Charles was the toast of his Carenage United after his sudden-death penalty-kick saved from a Casey Latapy effort earned the First Division leaders a 9-8 triumph over last year’s Northern Football Association FA Trophy winner Police in their quarterfinal encounter on Tuesday night.

This after both teams had battled to a 1-1 draw at the Carenage Recreation Ground, Haigh Street, and ended 4-4 when the first five penalties were taken with Police’s Colin Williams and Carenage’s Alvon Downes, the players off target.

With the win, Carenage set up a semifinal meeting with Maple which edged Morvant Elements 2-1 at the Coconut Drive Recreation Ground in their quarterfinal.

In the semifinal, last year’s beaten finalist and defending league champions Queen’s Park Cricket Club faces St Francois National after both recorded wins at Dibe Recreational Ground, Long Circular, St James on Wednesday night.

St Francois got a goal each from Jared Harry, Andre Peltier and veteran midfielder Marc Borde, all in the second-half to turn back a stubborn RSSR while the Parkites outgunned Paragon 5-2.

Queen’s Park tool early command of the contest via an own-goal from Rahul Alexander in the fourth minute and a strike from in-form Benedict Barrett two minutes later.

However, Paragon hit back through, Jevin Roberts in the 38th to trail 2-1 at the half, before the same player even the scores at 2-2 ten minutes after the restart.

Queen’s then found another gear and used a six minutes to score three goals through Jerome Charles (73rd), Akil “Shackey” Glasgow (75th) and Vladimir Henderson-Suite, in the 79th to put the match out of their opponents reach.
