Kendall Davis defies Defence Force.
By Gregory Trujillo.
11-Jul-2003 - A dictionary definition of defend is to resist an attack made on
— to protect. Soldiers ought to be the best defenders, especially in a
contest. However, footballers of the Defence Force made a mess of their capacity
to defend and paid the penalty on Wednesday, going down 0-3 to Vibe CT 105 W
Connection in the First Citizens Bank Cup series of the Trinidad and Tobago
Professional Football League.
Not only did the army defenders fail to contain the W Connection attackers, they
was also unsuccessful in defending the title against the same side it whipped
2-0 in the final last year at the same Hasely Crawford Stadium.
Defence Force also lost the first leg match 2-1 a fortnight ago.
Posing a major problem for Defence Force at the back was Kendall Davis, a
youngster destined to reach far in his footballing career.
The former St Benedict’s College striker was a thorn in Defence Force’s
defence whenever he had possession of the ball on the right flank. His speed,
dribbling ability and deft passing had the soldiers’ back against the wall
from the first blast of referee Ramesh Ramdhan’s whistle.
“Davis is a bright prospect for T&T football. He is one of the most
outstanding young players I have seen,” said Hutson Charles, coach of the
Defence Force.
“Given the right guidance, he could be an asset to T&T football,” he
added.
Charles admitted that the turnaround in the match came in the 42nd minute when
Davis made a brilliant move on the right side which resulted in the first goal
scored by Brazilian Gefferson Goulart.
“The game was even up until Connection scored. I thought my players didn’t
lift their game,” Charles Said.
On many occasions before the goal, the 21-year-old, who scored 27 goals in 1999
for WCFC in the inaugural National Under-20 League, left his main marker, the
normally reliable Adams, metres behind.
Davis was the architect of the goal. With no one tackling after setting himself
free from Adams, he made a perfect centre for Arnold Dwarika, who in turn laid
on for Goulart to finish in clinical style.
Charles felt that Adams and three of his other players were not on top of their
game during the match.
“Playing against a team like Connection you’re under pressure from the
start. Adams normally plays a solid game, but for some reason he wasn’t having
the game we expected.
“Davis is a guy with tremendous speed and Claude was no match for him on the
day.”
Winning coach Leroy Spann, a teammate of Charles in 1989, revealed that his side
achieved its objective.
“We achieved our objective to defend our one-goal lead away from home.
“Overall, my team played very well. Everybody contributed. Most importantly, I
like how the team defended.
“I must point out that Davis had a superb game. He worked hard offensively and
defensively. He has the potential to reach very far. But it is up to him,”
Spann said.
Connection’s second goal from Brazilian José Luis Seabra in the 48th came
when Ronaldo Viana darted inside from the right and tried to pass to Titus Elva.
A defender intercepted the ball, but it came back to Viana, who laid on for
Seabra, whose first time shot beat George from 20 metres out.
Goal number three in the 82nd by Silvio Spann, came as a result of a series of
knocks that involved Spann, substitute Kerwyn Jemmott, a replacement for Davis,
and Goulart.
Davis’ National Under-23 teammate Andre Toussaint, last year’s “Footballer
of the Year,” was mainly responsible for Joe Public advancing to the
semi-finals.
Toussaint, who has been struggling all season to find top form, scored a
“golden goal” after the first minute in extra-time against new team in the
tournament, SWIF (South West Institute of Football), who won the opening leg
encounter 1-0. Also advancing were CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh and North East
Stars.
Jabloteh disposed of Caledonia AIA 4-0 to add to an earlier 2-0 victory and
North East Stars defended a 2-0 win over Starworld Strikers by losing only 1-0.
