14-Mar-2002 - Defence Force FC pulled off one of the surprises thus far of the
FC Champions' Cup, defeating Pachuca CF 1:0 in the first leg of their
round-of-16 tie Wednesday night at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain,
Trinidad.
Kwesi Smith's goal in the 76th minute was the only difference between the two
sides, but the Trinidadian club was every bit the match for their Mexican
opponents.
A free-flowing but even affair, Defence Force had the better opportunities,
especially in the first half.
But Smith took advantage of a bit of good fortune in sending the Caribbean side
into the lead and giving them an advantage for the return leg in two weeks time.
The powerful wide midfielder made a run down the left flank and tried to put in
a cross, only to see it rebound off a defender. But he was quickest to the ball
in the corner of the area, ripping an angled drive which hit home and sent the
good-sized crowd home happy.
Goalscorer Kwesi Smith said he was probably the most anxious man in the Stadium
when he collected the ball leading up to his winning goal.
"It was a great feeling to score the goal, it was one of the biggest
moments in my career. The coach was really behind is throughout the match to
execute what we did in training. The fitness and the hardwork for the past six
weeks paid off," Smith said outside the team's dressing room.
Skipper Marlon Pierre said it was a fact that the background training of the
members of the team received in the Defence Force, worked much in their favour
and is in a way an advantage in some respects.
"The military background and training does a lot for us. It allows us to be
a bit tougher mentally and physically. We had a month and half to prepare and
everyone really wanted this victory badly. We worked had and got it in the end.
We were disciplined and did everything together as a team, we trained together,
eat together and we prayed together. We also had good support from the Defence
Force," said Pierre. He was expecting a tougher battle from Pachuca.
"Of course we were expecting a tougher match from them. We were able to
cope with their quickness. The next game will be tough but we are hoping by
going there one day before and playing one time will work for us."
Anton Pierre was solid throughout and notably posed problems from the free
kicks.
"I've been practicing these free kicks for some time now. I want to play
for my country at all times so I hope that the coach (Rene Simoes) is happy with
the way that I played and I hope to be part of his plans. I've developed since
I've been playing with the Army. I enjoy playing with the Army," said
Pierre.
