TTFF out of place to ban players - Andrews.

By Gregory Trujillo.
11-Feb-2003 - Professional footballer Lyndon “Chubby” Andrews believes that he should be earning at least US $3,000 for playing for the national team now that he has crossed over 50 caps.
And, he feels that the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation is out of place to ban players from representing the nation as well as their respective clubs.
Andrews, the most senior member of the current national squad, was suspended along with 18 team-mates from all activities under the aegis of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation last week, pending a full scale investigation of the players’ withdrawal from representing the country against Finland in a friendly international last Wednesday at Hasely Crawford Stadium.
“From the last World Cup campaign players with 50 caps and over were getting US $3,000 per match,” Andrews recalled. “These players included Latapy, Yorke, Dwarika, Eve and Ince.”
At the time, Andrews, an offencive midfielder, had over 30 caps and was paid US $2,000.
“Could you imagine receiving US $2,000 back then and having to play for nothing now,” Andrews questioned.
“I didn’t think any plans were put in place for the upcoming Gold Cup but we were told that we were going to be paid US $200 for the game against Finland,” he remembered.
“The players thought that that was not acceptable comparing the salaries that were paid previously.
“The Monday before the game against Finland, the Federation sent a message that we won’t be receiving any money. Everything turned ole mas from there on.”
Andrews said from his knowledge of having played abroad, he and his colleagues can not be suspended for more than five days.
“I am also not too certain that we could be suspended from national duty and from playing locally for our clubs,” he added.
Andrews, born January 20, 1976 represented St Mary’s College in his schooldays. He later player for Superstar Rangers, Joe Public and W Connection.
The stocky player spent two years with Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership Division but had problems securing another work permit last year and ended up playing for Vibe CT 105 W Connection.
“I was left without any options at Hibernian and had to come back to Trinidad,” he outlined.
“After the end of the Scottish season in May I returned home but could not play in Trinidad until the transfer window (period where a player can be registered before a certain date) had opened in September.”
Andrews pointed out that the national team was growing in experience and was beginning to gel under Technical Director Hannibal Najjar. Unfortunately, conditions under which they had to work was horrible.
“We, the players met privately because the situation and conditions which we were working under everyday had become unbearable for a national team.
“Basically, the training day started at 8.30 and at 12.30 pm we were still out on the pitch.
“After training there was only water available to us. No food, no nutritional drinks. No things like insurance. Tapes for wrapping ankles and medical supplies were hard to come by.”
Andrews claimed that Wayne Lawson, the physiotherapist, spent his own money for supplies for his medical kit. And, in addition, he got supplies from players coming from abroad.
“This has been going on maybe even before I started to play for the national team in 1996,” he noted, pointing out that all the players are insured at Hibernian.
Since the suspension, Andrew and his team-mates held one meeting so far with the sole intention of forming a Players’ Association.
“The Players’ Association would sought out situations like this and look after their affairs so that they (the players) would not be exploited.
“Players wouldn’t have to go on strike, risking their careers.

Lyndon Andrews awaits new move.

28-May-2002 - Lyndon Andrews is hopeful of signing a contract with a club in Europe but outside of Scotland or England within the next few weeks.
The former Joe Public midfielder is currently back home following the termination of his contract with Scottish side Hibernian and is now seeking a new deal in a League where he will not require a work permit. Andrews said he lost out on the chance to play in English First Division due to a lack of international appearances over the past two years which forced him out of a work permit. While here, he is hoping to sign a short-term deal either wit Public, former club Vibe CT 105 W Connection or CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh.
"I will like to get a couple months action with either club but I'm also waiting to finalize some business with my agent concerning a couple possible deals in Europe. I'm not sure where I'll be heading but something in Belgium seems likely," said Andrews. Belgium First Division club Lierse have expressed interest in him.

24-Apr-2002 - TnT midfielder Lyndon "Chubby" Andrews has terminated his contract with Scottish club Hibernian. The former Vibe CT 105 W Connection man made a request last week to end his two year contract before its' scheduled end this summer after realizing that he was well below the requirements to renew a work permit due to a lack of international appearances.
Hibs managing director Rod Petrie said his club had no problems in giving the early release to Andrews, who is reportedly seeking a move to Portugal or Belgium where he will not need a permit to play, according to reports in the Scottish Press.

Permit worry for Lyndon Andrews.

14-Feb-2002 - Lyndon Andrews could be heading for the Easter Road exit door in the summer amid worries he will not qualify for a new work permit.
Andrews has been with Hibs for two years, but could be forced out at the end of this season because of his lack of international appearances.
The Trinidad & Tobago star failed to make his country's squad for the Gold Cup and has fallen well below the 75 per cent international appearance rate which allows players to qualify for a work permit.
He has also fallen out of favour in Edinburgh and has only made one appearance as a substitute under Franck Sauzee.

Lyndon Andrews of to the Gold Cup.

08-Jan-2002 - Lyndon Andrews has been recalled to Trinidad & Tobago for participation in the CONCACAF 2002 Gold Cup which begins next weekend.
Andrews, who has not played for Hibs all season, has appeared more than 50 times for his country, and was called up to replace Reading midfielder, and former Hibs star Tony Rougier, who turned down the invitation to play for his home country.
Andrews is a surprise call-up after being used for just five minutes in two games under current T&T boss Rene Simoes. The former Joe Public midfielder has failed to cement himself in the Hibernian first team since the departure of countryman Russell Latapy and is short on match practice.
Andrews played in the Gold Cup for T&T in 1996 and 1998 and will link up with the national team on Tuesday. The "Soca Warriors" open their Gold Cup play on January 20 against Costa Rica in Miami, Florida.
Along with Hibernian midfielder Lyndon Andrews, the two foreign-based players replace Reading utility player Anthony Rougier and Lebanese-based striker Errol McFarlane Jr, who declined the invitation to join the “Soca Warriors” and will instead focus on their club careers.

Lyndon 'Chubby' Andrews wants more matches.

8-Nov-2001 - National midfielder Lyndon "Chubby" Andrews will be going all out to give a good performance in Sunday's 2002 World Cup Qualifier against the United States.
Andrews admitted on Thursday that he has not been enjoying the best of times recently for Hibernian but he is determined to keep on challenging for a spot in Alex McLeish's outfit.
"At the moment I cannot really say what is the problem with the club. Last Saturday I came on in the second half and we drew 0-0 so hopefully when I go back maybe things might change. I just have to keep my hopes high and keep on training hard."
My form has been okay but you need games to get match fit. Playing in the Reserve League games is no way to do that. You need to being in the best League to be able to produce your best. My form can be better," he told TTFF Media.
Coming off his first League appearance for the season, Andrews mentioned that while many have said that Hibs are missing Russell Latapy, it was more a case where the team is not playing with the kind of cohesion it had last season.
"It is hard to say that the club has been missing Russell. He has been a major influence at the club. Maybe the system is not suiting the players we have. There can be a lot of arguments. But every club will miss a player like Russell because of his quality. I think last year we had a better team. We don't have the cohesive unit at the moment but instead just more individuals. Probably it may come soon."
Andrews and Latapy have maintained a relationship despite being at different clubs.
"I have been looking out for him. He has a good contract with Rangers anyway so he will get his chance soon."
Andrews will now aim to press for Gold Cup selection.
"It is good to be back home. It is always a different vibe when you are home with the boys. You are always on a high when you are with these lads. I am just looking forward to Sunday's game and then take it from there," he ended
