The Saint Leo University men’s soccer team (8-5-1) defeated the Southeastern University Fire (9-3-2), 8-1 Tuesday night at University Field.

Saint Leo was led by Jonathan Glenn and Justin Weaver, each scoring two goals apiece. The two goals by Weaver marked the first and second of his career. Art Gendreau executed assists on both of Glenn’s goals giving him four on the season. Bruce Cutler pounced on his scoring opportunity in the second half, putting his third goal of the year in the net. Brandon Whitsett added his name in the scorebook, as well, blasting home his fourth goal of the season. Tyler Ramsdell and Jose Montelongo each had career first themselves, securing the first goals of their careers late in the match. Montelongo, Daniel Asher, Ruud Van Der Sarand Juan Chavez each helped their own cause with an assist each.

The Lions wasted no time striking in the fifth minute. Gendreau played a quality ball from the far right sideline into the middle of the 18-yard box. It was scooped up by Glenn and buried into the back of the net from the right wing. The lethal combo found each other again on an in swinging corner kick from the near corner flag. The ball crossed multiple defenders to the left side of the six-yard box, at the same time Glenn soared over his opponent and headed the ball into the net for the second tally of the match.
Weaver added to the Lions lead after he picked up a rebound off the post. He launched a rocket into the lower left part of the goal giving the Lions a 3-0 advantage. The shot marked his first goal of the season. The Fire added their only point of the contest late in the first half when a Saint Leo player was called for a foul inside the box resulting in a converted penalty shot.

The Lions didn’t skip a beat though, coming out of the locker room, scoring just five minutes into the half. Cutler blasted a ball past the diving Fire ‘keeper to increase to Lions lead to 4-1. Following a Southeastern red card, Weaver hammered home his second goal of the night just eight minutes later. A battle for possession near the top of the box resulted in Weaver breaking in clean on the goaltender  where he chipped the ball off the ‘keepers’ hands and into the middle of the goal. Whitsett delivered next for the Lions on far pass from Chavez on the left near sideline. He dribbled to the top of the zone and zipped the ball past the defenseless ‘keeper.

Ramsdell wasn’t going to be left out, as he redelected a shot in the 85th minute inside the box for his first career goal. Montelongo, who took the shot that Ramsdell deflected, blasted a shot from the right wing crashing the back of the net to extinguish the fire for good.

The Lions had 31 total shots and 20 shots-on-goal compared to just six total shots for Southeastern.

Griffin Pharr made four saves in the non-conference victory.

The Lions now face their biggest challenge of the season, as they head down to Boca Raton, Fla. to take on conference challenger No.2 Lynn University. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be heard on the Saint Leo Lions AudioCast Network.
