The Milligan College men’s soccer team started out on the right foot Saturday at West Virginia University-Institute of Technology (Montgomery, W.V.), as they defeated the Golden Bears 5-2.

Milligan opened up the scoring quickly when senior Phillip Wilson (Middlesbrough, England) knocked in a goal from fellow senior Travis Phillips (Winston-Salem, N.C.) in the 15th minute. The Golden Bears roared back scoring two unanswered goals, but the Buffs did not stay down long.

Just minutes before the horn sounded, the Buffs took the halftime lead after being down 2-1, compliments of back-to-back goals from Joel Cowan (Mt. Grace, Trinidad and Tobago) and Andrew Stewart (Newcastle upon Tyne, England), giving the Buffs the advantage at the break.

The score remained 3-2, until newcomer Sandre Wilson (Mandeville, Jamaica) hammered in a goal during the 68th minute to give the Buffs a comfortable lead. In the 75th minute, senior Joshua Scott (London, England) drilled in an insurance goal to finish off the Golden Bears and give the Buffs their first win of the season.

Defensively, senior Bryan Newbold (Sylva, N.C.) helped contain WVU-Tech as he recorded seven saves in the contest.

“We did what we wanted to do tonight,” commented Head Coach Adam Laney. “We knew it would be a hard fought battle, and the guys really stepped up and met the challenge. It was a quality team effort; all of the guys on the field played hard and did what we needed them to do.”

The Buffs return home Tuesday, Sept. 1, as they play host to Union University (Jackson, Tenn.). The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
