Despite outshooting Belmont, the Spartans fell on Sunday to the Bruins, 4-1, at the Whitten Soccer Complex.

Belmont (6-9-0, 3-4-0) got on the board first, scoring the lone goal of the first period, when Dan Meacock scored in the 21st-minute on an assist from Sam Miller.

Less than two minutes later, USC Upstate (1-11-3, 0-8-0) nearly tied the match at 1-1, but Tim Bailey (Simpsonville, S.C./Southern Wesleyan) had his shot ricochet off of the post and allow Belmont to keep the 1-0 advantage.

In the 31st-minute, the Spartans had a trio of shots denied by the Bruins.  Maurice Beggs (Arima, Trinidad/Middle Georgia) had his shot blocked by a Belmont defender, while Timo Foerster (Oberkirk, Germany/Hans Furler Gymnasium) and Erkan Yildirim (Flensburg, Germany/Flensburg University) had their shots saved by Bruin keeper Wesley Wray.

In the second half, Belmont tallied goals in the 56th- and 61st-minutes to push the lead to 3-0.

Upstate finally got on the board when Maurice Beggs scored his fourth goal of the season off of an assist from Tim Bailey to cut the lead to 3-1.

Belmont set the final margin at 4-1 when Nico Olsak scored his fourth goal of 2010.

Upstate used a pair of keepers in the match, both playing 45 minutes.  Jason McCabe (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork) played the first half and made three saves, while Andrew Miller (Hubert, N.C./Swansboro) played the final period and made three saves.  Belmont's Wesley Wray made six saves in the match.

Upstate outshot the Bruins 17-15 and owned a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.  Belmont committed nine fouls and was whistled for two offsides while Upstate was called for eight fouls.

The Spartans will return to action on Wednesday night as they close out the 2010 season with Senior Night against the ETSU Bucs.  Kick-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
