The Newberry men’s soccer team gave up a late goal and lost its match Saturday at Tusculum 1-0.

Newberry (4-5-0, 0-3-0 South Atlantic Conference) was outshot by Tusculum (2-6-1, 2-0-0 SAC) 12-2 in the first half, but goalkeeper Joel Johnson (Sangre Grande, Trinidad and Tobago) was able to keep all six shots that were on target out of his goal. The Wolves again were outshot in the second half 10-4, and despite four saves by Johnson the Pioneers were able to notch a single goal in the half.

Tusculum’s Stephen McNeill blasted a shot at Johnson in the 73rd minute that deflected off the keeper’s hands and into the goal. McNeill’s goal was his fifth of the season.

Newberry returns to action on Wednesday when it plays host to Wingate at 4 p.m.
