National defender Brent Sancho was a relieved man on Friday morning after signing a two-year contract with English club Gillingham.

Sancho was fearing that he would have to spend this season playing outside of the UK but after securing his work permit last week while in camp with the National team, he has now been able to sign for Gillingham, club of T&T English-born player Ian Cox.

“It’s  a huge thing off my back now,” Sancho told TTFF Media. “I was hoping something would come through for me and it all happened this week, added the former Dundee man who also earned kudos for a gritty showing against the Americans in Wednesday’s World Cup qualifier.

“I never doubted what I could do for the national team. One bad game doesn’t mean you can’t play and even with the injuries being frustrating, I always believed that I could come back and make a contribution. Unfortunately we went home with nothing and that’s what counts at the end of the day. We are second from the bottom but by far we are out of the race. A good result at home to Guatemala will push us right back into the run of things and I think all the guys are already pumped up for this one. We need the whole country to play in this match,” ended Sancho who got the number 5 shirt for his new team.

He completed his deal on a free transfer and is in contention for Saturday’s match against Bournemouth at Priestfield.
