The DIRECTV North East Stars Champion of Champions Invitational Football Tournament has reached the semi final stage after an exciting unprecedented play off match between Providence United and Biche United.
The game was played after the teams had identical records at the end of the group stage. "Although the provision in the competition rules called for a coin toss in this situation, both teams requested that a play off take place." said competition organiser and main sponsor, Darryl Mahabir, owner of the Japs Fried Chicken restaurants.
"With $30,000 as a first prize, I guess the teams wanted their destiny in their own hands rather than a toss of a coin"
Providence won the hard fought match two goals to one and claim the fourth qualifying spot. They will now face group winners Guayaguayare United at 1.30pm on 26th December at Ojoe Rd Recreational Grounds, while 2nd place Zavio's Construction Matura Re United face Express United at 3.30 pm. The teams will battle for a place in the final on 1st January where the winning team will win $30,000 in cash.
Last years defending champions, Zavio's Construction Matura Re United will be looking to retain their title and are expected to recruit some Pro League players to bolster their numbers.
"As this is a major fundraising event for North East Stars, we have requested special dispensation from the ProLeague to allow Pro League players to enter the competition at the semi final stage, providing they have written permission from their clubs." said Mahabir
Mahabir, President of North East Stars, added: "All of the North East Stars players will present on the 1st January, although I think they're more interested in our Soccer Fete which takes place after the football! The massive stage is now erected at Ojoe Rd and the early bird tickets have sold very well.

The semi finals take place on 26th December at Ojoe Recreation Ground with Guayaguayare vs Providence at 1.30 pm and Zavio's Construction Matura Re United vs Express United at 3.30pm.
