SIPARIA Spurs of the Southern Football Association (SFA) jumped to the top of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) Champion of Champions competition with a narrow 2-1 victory over St Clair Coaching School at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Tobago on Saturday.

With this victory the Siparia squad is guaranteed a place in the 2012 National Super League for the first time in their history.

Goals by Len Mejias in the 35th and 52nd minutes sealed three points for Spurs after falling behind to an early penalty that was converted by Desmond Joseph.

Spurs will play their final game of the Champions of Champion play-offs on Saturday afternoon against Harlem Strikers. Yesterday, Spurs president Roger Worrell described the victory as special.

“This was a crucial win for us and the players showed tremendous discipline in recovering from the penalty. Our qualification to the National Super League will have a great impact on Siparia and surrounding communities. We have been training very hard for this tournament and we were determined to be successful,” said Worrell.

He added, “We recognise that we are not only representing the Siparia area but all of south Trinidad and we have players from other communities like Fyzabad, Penal, La Brea, Point Fortin and even Moruga.”

Coach Curte Fermin, a former Trinidad and Tobago and Defence Force striker said he was pleased with the performance of the team. Fermin and his staff have already commenced preparations for the forthcoming Super League.
