Vessigny Secondary made a triumphant start to the 2005 South Zone of the RBTT InterCol series, with an emphatic 3-0 win over Mayaro Composite at the Many Ramjohn Stadium yesterday.

Vessigny opened the scoring in the 11th minute when striker Akeem Collins waltzed into the goal with the ball after Khalil Commissiong's long, right side lob was punched by goalkeeper Justice Maurice onto Collins' chest.

Nine minutes later, Collins got his double when Kurt Williams' powerful shot hit the post, bounced off the keeper and rebounded into Collins' path. He blasted into an open net.

Vessigny, the beaten 2004 finalists continued to dominate proceedings. And just before half time, they sealed the game when Commissiong raced up the right side, eluded two defenders and released a powerful, low drive that gave Maurice no chance, to send the Vessigny fans into wild excitement.

The Howard Spencer-coached squad went in at half time sitting easy.

In the second half, both teams had their share of chances. And with seven minutes to go, Mayaro's Jody Allsop almost reduced the lead but kicked overbars with only keeper Sherlon Swan to beat. With two minutes to go, Marlon Warner made another grand effort for the visitors with a powerful header that hit an upright and rebounded into play. Mayaro got another chance on full time through Kern Vincent, but he kicked straight at keeper Swan from about 10 metres out.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Kendall Penny, 16th, Manasir Ar-Razi, 35th and Matthew Bartholomew, 47th and 61st, gave St Benedict's College an easy passage into the semi-finals with a 4-1 win over Moruga Composite.

Today, Girls InterCol action will begin with Providence High School playing Chaguanas Senior Comprehensive at the training ground at the Hasely Crawford Stadium from 3pm, while at 3.30pm at St Mary's ground, St Joseph's Convent Port of Spain, play Point Fortin Secondary.
