Reaching the RBTT National Inter Col final is the dream of every team in the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL), but Mucurapo Secondary Comprehensive are in quite a hurry to get there.
While the "Dial Dynamos" failed to get going in their final fixture of the season, "Compre" refused to stop until the final whistle was blown.
Mutar Taylor hit the back of the net in the 89th minute to complete a hat-trick for Mucurapo after initiating the rout, while captain Kevin Molino doubled up during a ruthless display of football.
Arima must have expected a tough match, worse, without striker Nicholas Armstrong, who was injured during their 3-2 loss against St Augustine Secondary Comprehensive in Saturday's East Zone final. But the demolition that followed would have been a big surprise.
Mucurapo took over from kick off, Molino providing the energy in midfield with quick, sure movements and slick passing that set strikers Taylor and Akil Rodriguez free to run at Arima's goal. The quickness of Terrence Clarke and Johan Peltier in midfield and even the odd roving Mucurapo defender shocked Arima into submission.
Taylor set the scoreboard in motion in the 16th, driving in from the right and weaving his way effortlessly through Arima's defenders before threading the tight angle to Joseph Craig's far post.
By half-time, there was little doubt as to the winners, with Compre 3-0 up, Clarke and Molino finding the net as well.
Arima made a defensive substitution to stem the "goal-haemorrhage" and pulled back star midfielder Kendes Garcia into defence to close the holes appearing in their backline out of nowhere.
"Twinkle-toed" Clarke danced his way past four defenders in another solo effort and hit nothing but net in the 27th, while Molino scored three minutes later.
Arima should have taken their best chance of the match after the resumption, but Cody St Clair hit over from six metres.
Molino picked up where he left off in the 50th, teeing up a free kick which left back Joevin Jones skipped over, and Taylor blasted home from about 25 metres. Molino had his second eight minutes later, a simple tap-in from an innocuous Clarke free kick that landed at his feet in front of goal.
Garcia still tried to bring a measure of respectability to his team's score, his 67th minute free kick from 20 metres swooping and surprising Mucurapo goalie Michael Duff, who still managed to tip over.
Mucurapo replaced Clarke, Molino and Peltier to allow their substitutes to get some "big match" action, yet there was no slowdown in their attack.
A minute from regulation time Taylor provided the blow to end Arima's season, dribbling through defenders on the right side and surprising Craig with a sharp shot into his near post.
With Naparima College--the team that beat them in the SSFL Big Five final--out of the competition, Mucurapo must be licking their lips at the prospects of a first national title since 1983, and only their second ever.
