Jeremy DelpinoBoth teams were able to score less than 20 minutes in, but neither could find the net the rest of the way as Radford and Coastal Carolina played to a 1-1 double overtime tie in Big South men's soccer on Sunday afternoon at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium.

The Chanticleers (6-7-1, 4-1-1 Big South) broke through first in the 16th minute when a ball in front of the Radford goal mouth was punched out to Robert Hunter, who fired a shot from just inside the box and into the left side of the net to give Coastal Carolina the early advantage.

In the 18th minute, the Highlanders (7-7-2, 3-4-1) answered when junior Justin Zimmer (Chesapeake, Va.) played a ball deep into Coastal Carolina territory, and headed a crossing pass from the left side to freshman Shane Butler (Roanoke, Va.).  Butler played the ball back to senior Jeremy Delpino (Arouca, Trinidad) in the middle, who buried a shot from the left side, tying the game at one.

Both teams had chances to go ahead late in the contest.  In the 86th minute, Zimmer controlled the ball in the Coastal Carolina box and left a pass for Delpino, who ripped a chance from eight yards out that rang the crossbar.  On the rebound, freshman Lucas Hatcher (Stafford, Va.) was able to get a head on the ball, but pushed it just high.

In the fifth minute of the first overtime period, Ross Kelly dribbled downfield for the Chanticleers and at the 13 yard mark, stopped and fired a turnaround shot that senior goalkeeper Zach Roszel (Warrenton, Va.) punched over top of the net to preserve the tie.

Radford, which completed its home and conference portions of the schedule, heads to Elon for a 7 p.m. contest on Saturday, Nov. 1.
