Jason ProvidenceThe 23rd-ranked University of Mobile men’s soccer team closed out the 2008 regular season with an impressive 6-1 thrashing of visiting Berry College Saturday evening.

Mobile used a dominant first half to go up 3-0, and then kept the pressure on and closed it out with three more tallies in the final period.

In that game-making opening 45 minutes, the Rams out shot the Vikings 13-4 and tallied a trio of goals only 9 minutes a part to take control of the match.

Thomas Wharf opened the scoring in the 13th minute when he received a Matt Watts free kick in the box and found the back of the net. The Rams again used a set piece in the 16th minute to provide the game-winner. Jason Providence tallied the goal when Wharf headed a Gerardo Flores free kick to him. Jack St. Hilaire finished the scoring in the half when he knocked home a rebound off a Mohammed Habibzi shot.

Despite the comfortable 3-0 lead, Mobile kept the pace up, again out shooting Berry 10-4 in the final half. Ruben Diaz was the star of the half with a pair of goals and an assist. Diaz scored his first goal in the 60th minute on a blast from about 22 yards away, and then finished the scoring in the 86th minute when he took a feed from David Suchodolski and bent the ball around the defense, inside the far post.

Geert Slits added the other Mobile goal in the 64th minute when he headed home a Diaz corner kick. Mobile (8-6-2) next plays at home Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7 pm when Belhaven College comes to town for a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Semifinal contest.
