CENTRAL FC began their 2013 Christmas parcel collection yesterday at the California Supermarket, Southern Main Road, California.

The Pro League football club, who are based in California, Couva not only collected enough food last year to deliver over a dozen hampers, but also made presentations to Couva Children’s Home and Couva Home for the Elderly.

“Last year was a step into the unknown for us” said operations director Kevin Harrison. “But even so, we were pleased with our efforts and we were pleased that we could spread some Christmas joy to people in our community.”

Harrison said that although these projects take the footballers out of their comfort zones, once they participate, they enjoy taking part.

“Although community work is normal for footballers in Europe and USA, clubs in TT don’t really focus too much in these areas. But it is this kind of project that helps integrate the football club and its players into the community. Our players have to be role models to the youngsters in their community. With so many negative influences, we have a responsibility to set good examples of positive citizenry”

Players and staff will be collecting tinned and other non perishable food outside of supermarkets in Central over the next three weeks. The food will then be made into hampers for the entire playing squad and staff to deliver.

“Last year, our sponsor, SIS, asked us to support some of their Christmas projects, and we accompanied them to the children’s home and the home for the elderly. Because of the generosity of SIS, we formed a bond with the children and the elderly people and have carried them to games throughout the year.”

Harrison also said that the club was supported by various companies including Universal Foods, Holiday Snacks, National Flour Mills. “We depend on businesses to supplement the collections and are always grateful for their support. We hope that this year we will get even more help as we would like to deliver more hampers.

This is all about the people of Central helping their less fortunate neighbours. Communities don’t just happen, they are built on respect, understanding and generosity. Central FC are proud to be part of this community and we know that the people will come together to help those who are less fortunate”

In related news, the club will continue their youth trials today at New Settlement Ground, Caroni Rd, Chaguanas. Boys between 16 and 21 who want to try out for “the Sharks” youth teams should arrive ready to start at 9 am and walk with a red and a white jersey, black shorts, shin pads and boots.
