DEFENDING BARRACKPORE Football League champions Strange Village Sports Club started their 2014 campaign on a high when they crushed Cedar Hill United 5-0 at the Strange Village Recreation Ground, whilst reigning Knockout title-holders Diamond Rangers had to leave it late to earn a thrilling 3-2 win over JD’s Connection at Kennedy Park, as action kicked off in this year’s edition of the annual tourney.

Other results saw Barrackpore United Sports Club cruise past Revival Mission Sports Club 5-0 whilst Brickfield Falcons and Valleyline United battled to a 1-1 draw in Tabaquite.

Newcomers, Lower Barrackpore Sports Club, were outdone by their neighbourly rivals, Lower Barrackpore Angels 5-2 at the Barrackpore Recreation Ground with Kenton Jacob scoring a hat-trick.

This year, the competition will see 12 teams playing one round of football followed by the power round, to end the league.

This will be followed by the Knock out competition.

The teams participating this year include Barrackpore United Sports Club, Diamond Rangers, Moruga Football Club, Lower Barrackpore Angels, JD’s Connection, Strange Village Sports Club, Lower Barrackpore Sports Club, Valleyline United, Manahambre Football Club, Cedar Hill United, Brickfield Falcons and Revival Mission Sports Club.

The Barrackpore Football League is an initiative of the Barrackpore United Sports Club and kicked off at the area’s Recreation Ground on August 24.

The seventh edition will see the 12 teams compete for $35,000 in prizes.

The Barrackpore Football League is played out across several communities stretching from Barrackpore to Moruga to Brickfield.
