Defending champions Los Bajos United will meet Boca Juniors of Palo Seco in the Southwest Community Football Tournament’s second semifinal at the Petrotrin Velodrome in Fyzabad tomorrow at 3.30 pm. In the first semifinal last Sunday, New Creations of La Brea defeated Cap-de-Ville United 3-0 at the Point D’Or Recreation ground in La Brea. On Wednesday, Boca Juniors qualified for the semis with a hard fought victory on penalty kicks over K Brands of Marabella. The game was played at Guaracara Park Pointe-a-Pierre where the teams were officially met by Petrotrin’s Corporate Communications Manager Gillian Friday.

In a brief address to the teams before the kick-off, Friday said: “At Petrotrin, we believe that sport promotes healthy lifestyles and facilitates the all-round development of the individual. Many of you may recall that following our withdrawal from the Professional Football League last year, we gave a commitment to invest some of the funds, which would usually have been spent on the team, towards the promotion of youth development programmes, especially those in our fenceline communities. As such, when we were approached, we readily agreed to support this tournament, which brings together the top teams from Marabella, Fyzabad, La Brea, Point Fortin and Palo Seco. These are five of the communities in which Petrotrin operates and in which we have special interest.

“We are also pleased that we have been able to join with two of our partners in the energy sector, the National Gas Company (NGC) and the National Energy Corporation (NEC), who have come on board as co-sponsors of this tournament. “We hope that this initiative would serve to lift the standard of football in the southwest of the country. We also hope that the organisers and the participating teams would use the activity as a medium to build community interaction and spirit, by the encouraging fellow residents to come out and support.” First prize for the Southwest Super 5 tournament is $8,000 and the runners-up will receive $5,000.
