Petrotrin Palo Seco won the second promotion spot into the 2014 Blink/bmobile National Super League football competition, following a 2-0 home defeat of already promoted series winners La Horquetta Sporting Academy.

Formerly known as the Champion of Champions tournament, the Super League Qualifying Series saw six champions of the 2013 zonal football competition battling over five match-days for two promotion spots into the semi-professional Super League.

Sunday’s final day of the series saw former T&TEC Pro League players Jamaal Ayres (54th) and Kern Peters (73rd) score twice in the second half for Palo Seco, to inflict a first defeated on previously unbeaten East champions La Horquetta.

The East champs had already won the series after four earlier victories.

Southern Football Association champions Palo Seco went into the final day of the competition in contention with Central champions Las Lomas United for the final promotion spot.

But Palo Seco would have qualified either way, since La Lomas were edged 2-1 by Queen’s Park, which picked up a first win.

Ross Dowdeen (12th) and Chad Rocke (51st) gave the Parkites a two-goal lead, before Kareem Joseph scored a late consolation for La Lomas in the 82nd minute.

Having no chance of qualifying, the bottom team Mathura Reunited failed to make the trip to Tobago for their final match and lost by default to 2013 Tobago champions D’ Lime Bar Goal City.
