ARCH rivals, Naparima and Presentation College will clash heads once more on Saturday, when the annual edition of the Val Turton/ Carl Osborne Intercol Double-Header kicks off at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella.
Proudly hosted by the Val Turton/ Carl Osborne Foundation, this year’s event will feature two exciting games of football. The first match will see the girls go at it as Vessigny Secondary and Point Fortin East Secondary meet in the opener. Following this, both Naparima and Presentation’s 2012 Intercol teams will take the field in friendly battle for this historic title.
The Val Turton/Carl Osborne Foundation is a registered charitable organisation that is mainly patronised by Dr. Jean Ramjohn-Richards. This Foundation originated in 2001 when some past students, who played Intercol football for both colleges during the 40s, 50s and 60s, decided to honour the memory of their colleagues Turton and Osborne by making positive contributions to the development of football in the south, especially at the two involved institutions.
The funds raised by the Foundation are used to support the football programmes of the schools involved as well as to grant bursaries to graduating footballers and other sportsmen in the pursuit of tertiary education.
Over the past ten years, the Val Turton/Carl Osborne Foundation has awarded approximately $197,000 in bursaries to 35 students. The major fund-raising activities of the Foundation are an Annual Charity Golf Tournament that is held at the Petrotrin, Pointe-a-Pierre Golf Course on the first Sunday of May; an Annual Fund-raising Dinner held on the last Saturday in June; an Annual Intercol Double Header at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella on the last Saturday of October; and the donations of several individuals and corporate citizens
The Val Turton/Carl Osborne Intercol Double Header has the full support of its patron, Ramjohn-Richards, the Mayor of San Fernando (Navi Muradali), the principals and staff of the schools involved and is recognised by the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL).
It is expected that six Bursaries will be presented to deserving students of the four participating schools during the prize-giving ceremony at the end of the games. Ramjohn-Richards is also expected to be on hand to assist with these presentations.
