Saints pip QRC: St Mary's 1 - 0 QRC
St Mary's ran out deserving 1-0 winners on Tuesday over rivals, QRC at CIC Grounds, and pick up their first 3 points of the season. The result pull CIC level with QRC in the North Zone on points and goal difference but St Mary's do have a game in hand.
CIC was the stronger team from the opening whistle although their finishing failed to match up to some of their good build-up play. QRC could only soak up the pressure although they did venture forward now and then and looked dangerous on the counter attacks.
St Mary's could have had the lead in the 14th minute when Joel Superville hit a rocket of a shot which smacked the underside of the crossbar before bouncing back into play. Almost immediately after it was QRC with a good opportunity to open the scoring when Shabaka Mahluli created enough room to shoot from the top of the CIC penalty box but his effort flew just wide of the top left hand corner of the CIC goal.
CIC eventually got the game's only goal in the 33rd minute after QRC keeper, Kareem Joseph, failed to cling on to an Akhil Noel shot and could only parry it into the path of Renaldo Garcia and he easily tucked it into the open net to give his team the lead. It was Garcia's third goal in two games for the 'Saints'.
QRC did get forward a bit more after the break but still failed to create any good goal scoring chances despite gaining more ball possession than they had enjoyed in the previous half. CIC had a golden opportunity to double their lead in the dying stages of the game when substitute, Charles Hadden also struck the woodwork when his shot skimmed off the top of the crossbar.
QRC will be looking to make amends on Saturday 12th September when they host Woodbrook. St Mary's are also playing on the 12th and they head to St Anthony's College.
South Zone Round Up - Matchday 3
'Naps' ends Shiva streak: Naparima 2 - 0 Shiva Boys
Defending champions Naparima reclaimed top spot in the South Zone and ended Shiva Boys hot streak with a 2-0 victory over the new boys on Tuesday at Guaracara Park.
Shiva Boys fought hard and held out for the majority of the encounter, but eventually Naparima unlocked their defense through Jared Bennett in the 58th minute. Ryan Frederick doubled his team's lead 5 minutes later to ensure his team claim first spot in the South.
Shiva drop to 2nd spot with the result and will be hoping this result is just a speedbump on the highway as they continue to adjust to life in the big league.
Princes Town off the mark: Vessigny 1 - 2 Princes Town
Princes Town marked an impressive 2-1 road victory against Vessigny on Tuesday thanks to a double from Kevon Ayers.
Kevon McFarlane was on target for the home team but it was not enough to stop the visitors. Princes Town leap frog Vessigny and move into 5th spot, while Vessigny drop to 6th.
Presentation record first victory: Presentation 2 - 1 Siparia
Siparia slumped to their 2nd straight defeat on Tuesday when they faced Presentation at Guaracara Park. The home team ran out 2-1 victors thanks to goals from Kevin Moodie and Malcolm Nedd, but remain in 4th spot in the South Zone despite the result.
Siparia are yet to pick up any points for 2009 and remain at the bottom of the South Zone table.
Presentation go on the road on Saturday 12th September when they travel to Princes Town in what is traditionally a fierce encounter whenever these two teams meet.
Shiva Boys will be hoping to return to winning ways when they host St Benedict's College in Penal, the ground which has served them so well for this season. The bottom two teams also meet in Siparia when Vessigny make the trip to face cellar placed Siparia.
Both teams will surely be in desperate need of a victory if they are to challenge for the league title.
East Zone Round Up - Matchday 3
Green Machine hit top gear: Trinity 0 - 5 St Augustine
St Augustine sent a message to the rest of the East Zone on Tuesday when they demolished Trinity East by 5-0 at Trinity Grounds.
Theon James, Jevaughn Vance, Ethan Robinson, Nikkel Collymore and Aeion Charles all found the back of the net for the visitors to give them the emphatic road win.
St Augustine go top in the East with the victory with San Juan on a 'Bye' for this round of matches while Trinity East slips to 4th place.
Far East Derby ends in draw: Toco 2 - 2 Sangre Grande
Sangre Grande and Toco both registered their first points of the 2009 season after a hard-fought 2-2 draw at the Toco Grounds.
Keish Charles and Clayton Wallace netted for the home team, while Nicholas Ramroop and Stephon Kerr struck the target for the visitors.
The result leaves both teams tied for 5th in the East Zone with 1 point, 2 points shy of Trinity East.
Arima's nightmare continues: Arima 0 - 1 El Dorado
Arima suffered their third straight defeat on Tuesday at the hands of El Dorado Secondary by a slim 1-0 scoreline courtesy Shaquille Smith at the Larry Gomes Stadium.
El Dorado are now 3rd in the East, level on points with San Juan, but having a lower goal difference than the defending champions.
El Dorado will be hoping to continue their fine form when they meet Trinity East on Saturday 12th September.
Arima will also be looking for their first points on Saturday when they travel to Sangre Grande to play the new boys, while San Juan get back into action with a road trip to Toco.
Central Zone Match day 1 Roundup
Marabella stun Pres: Presentation 0 - 1 Marabella
Central Zone action kicked off on Tuesday with Presentation going down to Marabella by 1-0 at Presentation Grounds. Nial Alexandar scored the game's only goal giving his team a shock victory over their more illustrious opponents.
Waterloo go down to Gasparillo: Waterloo 1- 3 Gasparillo
Two years ago it was Waterloo causing the upsets in the Central Zone when they were recently promoted, but this time it was Gasparillo that surprised Waterloo defeating them by 3-1 in Waterloo on Tuesday. Michael Walters opened the scoring for the visitors but Waterloo pulled level through an Isaac Jack goal. Walters restored the lead after the break and Akil Stafford capped off the surprise victory with a strike of his own.
Preysal out of competition
Preysal will not be taking part in this years competition after failing to register before the deadline. All teams carded to play against Preysal will receive a 'Bye' for that fixture date.
Saturday 12th September will see Gasparillo facing a stiff home test in the form of Carapichaima, last season's defending champions. Waterloo will also be looking to bounce back when they host a confident Marabella team buoyed after their opening day victory.
