Travis Mulraine has resigned from his position as coach of T&T Premier Football League’s Tier 2 outfit Guaya United.
His decision to resign, citing improper organisation at the club, came on Wednesday, a few days before the team plays its third match of the tournament against RSSR at its Guayaguayare Recreation Ground on Sunday.
Mulraine, 46, told Guardian Media Sports that he struggled to get simple things such as refreshments and kits for training and matches. The club manager and owner Randy Hagley said on Saturday that there was also poor attendance at training sessions, which affected the team badly during matches.
After a failed attempt to have its opening game of the season put off due to no uniforms, Guaya claimed its first three points from a 3-0 victory over Eagles FC before a loss against Police left them with a win-loss record in two matches.
Hagley confirmed that Mulraine’s place was filled by former national defender Glenton Wolfe, who started his career at North East Stars, which is now AC Port-of-Spain, of the T&T Pro League. Wolfe also represented San Juan Jabloteh and W Connection in the Pro League.
In November last year, Naparima College parted ways with Mulraine and his assistant coach Anthony Sherwood. Mulraine and his technical staff took over at “Naps” in 2022 after former head coach Angus Eve took up the post as Trinidad and Tobago Senior Men’s Team head coach.
In 2014, Wolfe moved to India to sign for Churchill Brothers SC in the I-League where he joined his brother Anthony Wolfe.
Shortly after Churchill Brothers were relegated, Wolfe signed for rivals Sporting Clube de Goa. Locally, Wolfe’s pedigree as a coach is expected to be tested despite playing against unfancied RSSR who has been winless in the league so far. That match will begin at 4 pm.
Apart from the Guaya/RSSR match-up, Harlem Strikers will attempt to claim home advantage when they face the University of T&T at 3.30 pm at their Frederick Settlement home in Caroni, while the MIC Matura United will have a date with Defence Force at 5 pm at their Matura home ground.
Matura is unbeaten to date, courtesy of the goal-scoring prowess of strikers Shakiel “Smeck” Henry and Kerin “Chucks” Vincent. However, they could face a tricky test against the Army Coast-Guard Combination team which has not been at their best as yet.
In another game today, Petit Valley Diego Martin (PVDM) United will be up against Queen’s Park at 3.30 pm at St Anthony’s College Ground in Westmoorings.
