The RSSR Football Academy held its official book launch commemorating their 10th Anniversary on Wednesday at City Hall, Port-of-Spain.

This book gives in full detail, the history, tournaments, successors, achievements and graduation ceremonies over the past 10 years, at the RSSR Academy; with special mention of “The Russell Latapy Invitational”. This being, a tournament that focusses on monitoring the same batch of players over a three-year period.

The launch brought the support of veteran footballers including young “Soca Warriors” assistant coach Anton Corneal, former Member of Parliament and Ex-Malvern player Eddie Hart, ex-national goalkeeper Lincoln “Tiger” Phillips, and National Security Minister Brigadier John Sandy.

Sports Ministry Permanent Secretary,Ashwin Creed gave the feature address and saw the launch as a celebration of success within the academy.

He also praised the coaches and staff for their professionalism and recognition in the talents of youth, specifically in the John John and Laventille areas.

Creed said, the Ministry of Sport has deployed resources in these communities, like the Freedom Cup Tournament, and intends to reshape sports and enhance coaching skills to close the gap between Trinidad and Tobago and other highly developed sporting countries.

He emphasised that RSSR made a social transformation by making sports attractive and enjoyable to both players and fans.

He applauded the academy for being a “beacon of strength and hope” and said he stood ready to assist in any future developments.

RSSR chairman Ruthven Charles, stated that it all comes back to the academy’s motto: Discipline plus Dedication equals Development. Being highly focussed on education, self -esteem and respect,

Charles saw these as an integral part of their sporting programme and strongly implements these qualities from their juvenile system (U-13).

The national anthem, prayers and self -esteem activities are critical in this type of training.

RSSR also hosts field trips and award ceremonies, so players feel comfortable and have a chance to socialise, thus enhancing their mental fitness and understanding on the playing field.

Charles also mentioned that their long-term goals are to enter the Professional League as well as the opening of a football school.

Next on the agenda of RSSR is the one day Russel Latapy Invitational Tournament which is scheduled for November 5 from 9 am.
