Bethel United are the champions of the Dwight Yorke Under 14 tournament that was hosted by St. Clair Coaching School at the School's football ground at Carnbee, last weekend.

However, the response was very poor to the 18th edition that is named after Tobago's and Trinidad and Tobago's most renowned footballer Dwight Yorke. Only six teams participated while just two turned up for the Girls seven-a-side which was cancelled. The two teams played an exhibition match.

In the Boys Division the teams competed in a Round Robin tournament. The champions, Bethel United collected a full set of uniforms for their prize while the host, Coaching School and Mason Hall SSS were the first and second runners-up, respectively.

Bethel United's Anton Keades was adjudged the most Valuable Player, Mason Hall SSS's McKail McKenzie scored the Most Goals and Coaching School's Keno Gardiner was the Best Goalkeeper.

The sharp decline in teams in the tournament which boasted 25 to 30 teams including teams from Trinidad in its early stages is a worrying factor to the organisers and Terry Joseph, an official of the School told the Tobago News that they will be making a concerted effort to increase the participation of teams.

He said that they may bring forward the date to the weekend before schools close in order to attract the schools teams.

Meanwhile, National Under 17 coaches Anton Corneal and Mike McComie were impressed with what they saw at a trial session for Under 17 players at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, last Friday.

Over 30 players turned up for the session and they were given a number of fundamental drills to do. They also participated in a scrimmage game.

However, the coaches did not select any players to start attending trials in the New Year for the National Under 17 team that will begin early preparations for the CONCACAF Qualifiers for the upcoming World Cup Finals.

Because of the limited time that the coaches had and because they were impressed with what they saw, Corneal decided to set up two games for the Tobago players with the National team before inviting players to trials. The games will be played at the Dwight Yorke Stadium on Sunday and Monday.
