Penal All Stars and the University of T&T (UTT) were two of four teams to secure in the Southern Football Association Petrotrin Super League Big Six competition with comfortable victories in their respective groups on the weekend.
In the Winston St Clair Group A seven-team series, Penal All Stars got a double from Andrew Quashie and one from Jamal John to whip last year’s winners’ Pt Fortin Civic FC 3-1.
With the win, Penal All Stars ended its 12-match campaign with 26 points, one ahead of fellow qualifiers Petrotrin Palo Seco which won by default over Centre For Excellence and has a match left as well.
Despite the loss, Pt Fortin Civic FC which got its lone reply against Penal from Amarie Ettienne also qualified as it has 25 points with two matches left and cannot be caught by any other club.
In the Roy Jagroopsingh Group B, UTT got a goal each from Keron Waldron, Theon James, Garvin Samaroo and Jamal Creighton in its 4-1 spanking of Marabella Family Crisis Centre in a top-of-the-table encounter.
The victory carried UTT to 30 points from 11 matches, and three left to play while Marabella which had Linse Sherwood on target stayed second with 25 points and not certain of qualification to the Big Six as chasing clubs Big Dreams (22 points) and Union United (18) are both still in the fray with three, four and three matches remaining for the trio.
Last night, Petrotrin Palo Seco had a chance to claim its first title this season in the SFA when it faced Marabella Family in the League Cup final at Palo Seco Velodrome. Petrotrin Palo Seco is also through to the Executive Cup final against UTT.
